But what the Denver business community, Capitol Hill residents and Colfax commuters will soon discover, is that Argonaut brings more than a classic architectural face-lift to this infamous strip. The highly anticipated Argonaut “sign” will be hoisted onto the corner of the structure and unveiled to the community at 10:00 am on December 3. The sign may be a commuter landmark for the next 40 years so the Robinson family turned to national experts to design and create it. And what is it? Well, let’s just say the city experienced a bit of bottle-shock when approached for approval.
Approval went through a few iterations - but ultimately it was agreed that the three-dimensional bottle was not only consistent with the new Main Street Zoning plan, it was a bold and fitting toast to the area’s redevelopment initiative. So up it will go. Fifteen feet of bubbling champagne suspended two stories high at the corner of Colfax and Washington. The Mayor, along with community and business leaders will be on hand for the December 3rd event.
Argonaut is Denver’s largest volume wine and liquor store, but volume outgrew the building years ago. “Our new building is much larger, more efficient, greener, and a much better shopping experience for our customers”, said Vaughn. The new store will feature a temperature controlled fine wine room, a tasting area, better lighting throughout the store, two times more cooler space, and 60% more display area. “The customer is going to love the new experience”, says Ron. “And those who know Argonaut know that we’re all about catering to the customer”.

And they’re catering to the environment too. The project was designed by Brad Buchanan, Buchanan Yonushewski Group, LLC, and is being overseen by Hampton Development Company; a locally owned development company operated by principals Jeff and Scott Robinson. According to Jeff Robinson, “We brought on Brian Levitt one of the foremost leaders in green building in the country, to create one of the greenest liquor stores in the world.” The Store’s green features will include solar power, locally sourced and recycled-content structure, high efficiency HVAC units, lighting, and water fixtures, high-performance glazing, insulation and building materials, construction recycling during and after construction, and many others.” “Given the high-energy demands of a modern liquor store, we felt it was imperative to implement a number of high-tech and low-tech sustainable construction solutions to reduce Argonaut’s ecological footprint during construction and after. This will certainly be the greenest liquor store that I am aware of, “says Brian Levitt of HDC.
The highly anticipated sign will be unveiled during a “Pop the Cork Celebration” at 10:00 am on December 3. Argonaut invites metro Denver businesses, community leaders, customers and friends to take part in the grand opening festivities from 10:00 am until 11:00 pm. on Wednesday, December 3, with events and specials continuing throughout the week. Many community businesses will support the event with food, beverages and services including; CityGrille and CityPub, Dora’s Mexican Restaurant, Appaloosa Grill, Mici’s, IZZE, Freshies, Alpine Food Service, Indulgences, Caffe Sanora, Red Bull, Rocky Mountain Valet, MLA Photonix, Country Club Flowers, Mountain High Tree, Lawn and Landscape, The Wilhelm Group and Wright Group Event Services. Beginning at 10:00 am the public can preview the new superstore where there will be fantastic prizes, suprises and hourly in-store specials. “This family-friendly event celebrates our city’s vibrant future and colorful past, and is our way of thanking Denver for 40 years of support,” said Vaughn.

Passers by will notice the name on the street-facing placard is Robinson Building - a tribute to the quietly philanthropic family, and Hank Robinson, the big-hearted community advocate and Argonaut founder. Hank has always been so respectful of the fact that our business has thrived because of our community and has seen to it that being a good neighbor and giving back to the city is an integral part of the Argonaut brand,” said Vaughn. Denver has been good to us, and we believe we’re good for Denver. We worked hard to create a culture and a new space that fits in with our overall mission”.
Keep an eye out for the new 15 ft. bottle of bubbly on the all-new Argonaut Wine and Liquor superstore at Washington and Colfax.
